Kitchen Volcano Science Project

Over the past few weeks we have been making a Kitchen Volcano. It is a really fun science project to do at home and also combines a little arts and craft; if you have an aversion to mess, maybe it's not your ideal project but the children will LOVE it. And there are good scientific principles behind it to discuss, so it is great for science-related show and tell, science fairs and home school projects.

The 'explosion' is caused by bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, and red food colouring, which are simple and cheap to obtain if you do not already have them in the store cupboard. You can have fun researching the reasons why it makes froth with your children (hint: it is basically a chemical reaction which produces gas).  There are a couple of different methods to making an effective froth.

Another way of extending the task would be to research a couple of these different methods and experiment to find the best one, as I am sure that there are even more effective methods than the one we used.

A further step after making the volcano would be to bake sponge cakes - you could also then discuss why adding bicarbonate of soda to cakes helps in the baking process.

MAKING YOUR VOLCANO

I would recommend using a medium sized cardboard box (with one side and the top cut away) as a base - it minimises later mess and makes the volcano somewhat portable.

You need:
an empty plastic drinks bottle
PVA glue and water mixture (about half and half)
newspaper
poster paints (red, and grey or brown)
sticky tape

First using sticky tape, secure the bottle to the base. Then scrunch up some newspaper into balls and loosely tape around the bottle to make a mountain shape.  After this, taking strips of newspaper which you have dipped completely into the PVA glue mixture, lay them around the shape until you have something resembling a mountain. Be sure to leave the bottle mouth clear and open.

Leave the paper mache to dry for at least 8 hours. When it is hard and dry, using paints, make your mountain a little more realistically rock like. You can add a red lava flow at the top if you like.

MAKING THE EXPLOSION

You need:
red food colour
1/4 cup of vinegar
2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda
warm water
washing up detergent

The original method I saw for making a kitchen volcano simply states: Put the bicarb in the bottle. Add the red colour to the cup of vinegar. Pour into bottle. Stand back.

However, my husband read that if you put warm water and detergent in first you get a better fizz. This is the method that we tried and it was OK. The children found it exciting. I would have liked even more boom, but I am not easily pleased.

On a side note, I think you can't possibly put in too much colouring ;-)

Foodie Friday: Lunchbox - Are you ready?

That  Back to School craziness is almost upon us, and I, for one, am not looking forward to lunchboxes. I have many lunchy ambitions, but I suppose the terror about them is that:

1) in reality I don't find the time to create the bento-style packed lunch  of my dreams

2) when asked my kids always say they want crisps and a sandwich. It's almost like they want what everyone else has!!

Also, it does get more complicated the more you have to do per day. I am only on 2 a day, soon be 4 though when the youngest get to school, so I guess I better shape up soon. One of the best things I ever heard was my friend who makes all her sandwiches on Sunday night, then freezes them. That is a marathon session of 30 sarnies at a time. Phew.

While I was thinking about lunches I found this amazing post which says everything I wanted to and MORE. Life at the Zoo has pretty much said it all!

So I won't go into most of my ideas about lunch which are either a less good version of what's in that post, or no way as good!

But let me leave you with a little challenge for the next term. It's all about building a better lunchbox. One that is funner (I know, not a word) and more healthy. One that cements the individual bond between mother and child, not churn out same old same old. Ambitious? Well all the above might be so much guff, but I think that Iit might be a simple matter of substitutions ie better lunchbox foods replacing poor, overly familiar choices.

Over the next few weeks in my Friday posts I will be creating Items for a Better Lunchbox. If any of you have recipes and ideas which you like to use, I would LOVE to share posts from your blogs too, readers.

Join me - on my LUNCHBOX CHALLENGE!!!! More to follow........

A wedding hat

One of the reasons why I never seem to blog about actual things I have actually made is that I spend a lot of time doing random stuff  - school fancy dress costumes, cooking chickens for visits by relatives (had 11 people over on Sunday - that's a lot of chicken) - and attempting new prototyes for things I might sell. As I have not sold anything for AGES I feel that I have carte blanche to keep trying new things. So here are some sneeky peeks into what I am currently dabbling in.

But first I unveil the masterpiece (scoff) that is my daughters entry into the school 'Royal Wedding Hat' competition today. OK they were supposed to do it themselves but I guarantee you none of the hats I saw were child created. How many 5 year olds do you know who could make a 3ft papier mache top hat covered in Union Jacks? Competitive Mummy Syndrome kicked in although I did get her to cut out the bunting herself (after I had drawn triangles onto the fabric for her, naturally). She designed it. I just sewed it all on.

Proud and a little bemused

So onto the pathetic attempt to persuade you I am actually managing productivity with a baby crawling all over me.

Lilac Pinwheels - A stack of really pretty fabrics waiting to be a quilt aswell. I consider making this pile part of the work!!!

Mermaid Baby - I have a real urge (why) to make some little mermaid toys but am trying to create something a little different that will kind of sit well with the whales I have already got. It's not perfect yet, it's missing something. Any ideas?
