They say: "Story of Mum is a community of supportive mamas doing creative stuff to celebrate the ups and downs of motherhood."
One of the less positive things about new motherhood is that it can be very isolating, especially if you don't know many other mum people. Or the ones that you do know all seem so busy, or competant, or 'mature' compared to you. However when you do get together with other like-minded mothers, what a relief! It turns our that we are all live through much the same things, and even when we don't, those diferences can be illuminating.
Here is a great project harnessing the creativity of many disparate mothers across the country to spark a wider debate via simple artistic projects. What does it mean to be a mum? How do you feel about the roles society or circumstance has thrust upon you? What are your identities, and how do you negotiate motherhood through them?
As their website shows, we are all welcomed. Why not get involved?
Tonight there is a chance to get involved in making a collage about your self, out of found pictures. It's called a #somum 'Make Date' and is on Twitter from 8.30 - 10pm. At that time you are encouraged to share your images. More info on their blog here. I have created this Mama Mash Up, titled 'Mother Courage' which represents two sides of my personality, and references my art history training as well as my love of 'kawaii'. And of course features lots of children and breastfeeding right through the middle! I think that we all need a little courage sometimes, to be ourselves and work/parent in a style we are comfortable with, where sometimes there is a lot opposing pressure. That pressure is not always external!
