Bedroom Ideas: Wonder Woman

For some reason I keep seeing Wonder Woman related things recently. A female super hero revival is long overdue, as I am fed up of all the children at my daughters nursery being loopy about Batman and Superman. Come on small people, aren't you aware of how much choice there is? Being entirely a product of their environment, of course they aren't cogniscent of the immensity of the 'marvellous' superhero universe, so, let's help them out a bit.

Here are my decorating ideas for giving your daughters bedroom a little Wonder Woman style makeover. It's all basically unisex and the same shop that make this brilliant Wonder Woman picture also do Superman etc so you could get several and really theme it up! I'm thinking a primrose yellow wall. And basically nothing that will be ruinous to replace when your own supergirl is "too mature" for cartoon ladies. Although that's never happened for me. How about you?

I'm not being paid to write this post, it's just some shopping ideas. I have bought from some of these retailers in the past but please don't hold me responsible for any dealings you have with them, thanks.

Magazine Rack Makeover

This week I have been trying to catch up on a lot of projects that I have had hanging around, some for literally years! I like the fresh energy of the New Year, it always encourages me to try and tie up loose ends and get rid of those half finished bits.

I decided to finally finish upcycling a magazine rack that I received, broken, over two years ago. Last year I found the most perfect MidCentury style fabric that was also a great colour match for some of the furniture I already have in my lounge. Luckily I decided to keep it with the broken rack, so it was all ready to whip out at the opportune moment. Which finally came!

While I was doing it I kept uploading my progress to Twitter, because I was feeling lonely (or attention seeking, whichever). So there are more pictures if you are interested, on the hashtag #magazinerackmakeover.

The plastic covering of the original is a pretty cool pattern, so in the spirit of recycling I will be keeping that for some unspecified project.....

I love it! Now I am feeling the upcycling bug I will roam the house looking for new victims/candidates.

Watch this space!

Making Curtains

Although it was task 1278899 on my list of things I want to sew, making curtains for our coldest room (because it has no curtains....) has become number 1 on my list of things I have to sew. My husband is virtually pleading with me to get on with it, I have bought all the stuff (in fact, two years ago) and I seem to have some time. On NO!!

Why I don't like making curtains is, the seams. I am not a big fan of anything with long seams and unmanageable bulk, which is why I have not made a quilt for any of the beds larger than Toddler size. Also, all the interlining and lining and whatnot seems like a terrible faff. But then, I tried some curtains without any lining for the nursery (there's already a blind there) and they are really thin and pointless.

These curtains let in waaaaay too much light!
However, I then discovered a useful product which seems to have cut down my grief somewhat, a type of curtain lining with interlining pre-bonded to it. At this point in the project this seems like a life saver, and it gives the whole project a more luxurious drape, but the stuff I had could have been a teensy bit wider. Here, I admit,  I was rather a cheapskate and refused to buy 5m extra just so I could have more fulsome curtains. They close, I just would have preferred an extra 5cm or so each side.

Anyway - here are my curtains - NOT HEMMED! I thought I would let them hang a while before I did that last job. Well, it wouldn't be right if I ever actually completely completed the project yet, would it?!

The fabric is Frederika from IKEA.

What have you made for your house this year?

Treasury Tuesday

It's probably going to be the first year in about 10 where we are invited to NO weddings, so I am getting my fantasy wedding fix the Etsy way.

Curtains curtains

Another brief post as I attempt to raise my head above the parapet of chaos my home life descended into upon the arrival of Child 3. In betweenst dreadful laundry and nappy piles I occasionally manage a little sewing, and have recently been actually busy with real paid sewing. Which makes a change!

Last project to be finished, a desperate plea from my neighbour - she is moving tomorrow and has still to finish the curtains for her daughters room. Correction - she had not started them, as they were an embellishment project and she works full time, 200 miles away, only at home at the weekends. So of course I agreed to help and it was all handed over to me to figure out. Hence I have been frantically basting felt circles onto a velvet curtain. Might I say that although these will be lovely and warm in the childs bedroom they are not ideal sewing for a hot evening! Here are some pictures to give you an idea. Unusual, and I hope, pretty when up.

Bedroom design lust

I am still looking for inspiration regarding how to decorate my bedroom. I thought that I would share this recent post from Design Sponge, which is an amazing blog anyway. Here we have a bedroom makeover that I am in love with! I want this bedroom. But I know that if I tell my husband 'yellow zig zag curtain and grey wall' he will sooooo not agree! But I think that a grey wall is definately the way forward.

More 1970s decorating ideas

Red Rum Red Rum
As per my previous post I have a new book about 1970s home decor that I am enjoying thumbing through very much. As I unexpectedly have a little extra time tonight whilst my daughter is listening to a nice long story CD, here are a few more pictures.

"Women got the vote? Huh, that's news to me. Another Tom Collins dear?"

Hang this outside your kids bedroom and I guarantee quiet nights

Showcase Sunday - Amyorangejuice

This Sunday I am beginning a new series of Showcase Sundays, to big up some of my favourite Folksy shops. This week I had to begin with my very good friend and inspiration Amyorangejuice. Her beautiful stained glass is top of my covet list! From small sun catchers to wonderful commissioned windows, her colours and designs are simply lovely. You can also find her on her own website. Happy Sunday xx

Holiday Inspiration - Exhibit C - Interiors

While I was in Wales last week I went visiting and had to post up these pictures of the house I stayed at. The lady who lives there is really into vintage and 'shabby chic' stuff and there are lovely ideas to be found all over her house. I particularly loved the combination of modern art, vintage textiles and antique furniture collected over the years. Lush!

Holiday Inspiration Exhibit B - the shopping bit

OK so when in Wales I couldn't avoid checking out the local produce which mainly meant eating a lot of welsh cakes and Aberdyfi sausages. But I also had a fantastic time poking around in Machynlleth town which has a just brilliant fabric shop (massive! 3 floors. drool) called PS Wheeler Fabrics. I managed to get some really great zingy fleece fabric to make some baby sleeping bags from. I also bought a huge wad of handmade buttons from a FairTrade shop. Couldn't resist. Fabricheads should also try and visit on market day (Tues?) as there was a quilting stall selling a comprehensive assortment of quilters fabric. DH rolled his eyes and went to sit in the bus stop nearby. Anyway, now I have so much welsh largess to make things with I don't know where to start. Also I am pretty sure that the cardigan I am currently making needs 6 identical buttons and the ones I have are in sets of 5. Typical!

Cushions

On the other hand, for the bird room, I have also got some amusing 60s style tree print fabric which I got from IKEA that would make a good cushion. And then I could also team it with homemade copies of my current favourite high street cushions from John Lewis! OK that's the cushions sorted - I reckon white walls................

Spring Birdies

Despite the grey skies today there has been a distinctive spring mood about the place lately. Today, I heard the first cuckoo and have been musing on home decor of the avian variety ever since I got my new lampshade through the post. Now planning my reading room around the crazy bird cage that will dominate it!
